FAQ

What is the difference between an AGM and a standard battery?

An AGM battery is a sealed VRLA lead acid design that holds electrolyte in a glass mat, while many “standard” automotive batteries are flooded lead acid with free liquid electrolyte. AGM construction improves spill resistance and vibration tolerance, and it typically reduces routine service compared with flooded designs.

AGM also tends to accept charge efficiently and supports partial state-of-charge operation better than many flooded starter batteries, which helps in modern vehicles and mixed-duty use.

Do AGM batteries require a special charge?

AGM batteries do not require a unique charger, but they do require correct voltage control and an AGM-compatible charge profile to avoid undercharge or over-voltage. Many AGM technical guides specify bulk/absorption targets around 14.1–14.7V for a 12V AGM battery, then a lower float level for standby maintenance.

Charging references commonly place float charging in the 13.2–13.8V range, with current limits depending on battery size and charger design. In practical procurement terms, specifying chargers with an AGM mode and verifiable voltage regulation reduces early-life claims.

How long do AGM batteries last?

Service life depends on temperature, duty cycle, and how deeply the battery discharges, so the same model can age very differently across use cases. In typical automotive use, credible service guidance often places AGM replacement intervals around three to five years, with longer life possible under stable temperatures and well-managed charging.

High heat, frequent deep discharge, chronic undercharge, and heavy stop-start cycling shorten life, while correct charge voltage and reduced time at low state of charge extend it. For procurement planning, treat lifespan as an application variable and qualify against the real duty profile rather than a single “years” number.
