What Batteries For Outdoor Solar Lights Should I Use?

Most garden and pathway lights use 1.2 V rechargeable AA or AAA cells, usually NiMH or older NiCd chemistry, so you should match both voltage and chemistry on the label. Never drop in non-rechargeable alkaline cells or 3.2–3.7 V lithium cells unless the light is specified for them, as many compact fixtures do not have the right charge circuit for lithium packs.

Can I Replace Ni Cd With Ni MH Batteries For Outdoor Solar Lights?

In most simple solar lights you can replace Ni-Cd with Ni-MH batteries of the same size and voltage, and many users do this to avoid cadmium and gain higher capacity. The lights will still work, but some older charge circuits are tuned for Ni-Cd, so Ni-MH cells may not always reach a full charge in poor sun and may age a bit faster; always replace all cells in a light as a matched set.

Can Higher Capacity Batteries For Outdoor Solar Lights Improve Runtime?

Higher-capacity batteries for outdoor solar lights (higher mAh at the same voltage and chemistry) can extend night-time runtime, but only if the small solar panel can recharge them fully most days. If the panel is weak or shaded, very high-capacity cells may sit half-charged, which can shorten their life, so modest upgrades (for example from 600–900 mAh to around 1200–2000 mAh NiMH) and following the manufacturer’s guidance are safer choices.
