Replace a solar battery when usable capacity falls below ~70–80% or it can’t meet required runtime. Check State of Health (SoH) in the BMS/app, or run a timed discharge at a steady load (≈C/5) and compare amp-hours delivered to the nameplate. Consistent shortfall, growing voltage sag under normal load, or rising internal resistance indicates end-of-life.

Age, cycles, and fault behavior also guide the call. Many LiFePO4 battery packs are rated for roughly 3,000–6,000 cycles to 80% capacity under moderate temperatures; hot or cold sites shorten that range. Plan replacement if you see recurring BMS lockouts, cell imbalance that won’t balance at top-charge, swelling/odor/heat, or if warranty life is ending and the pack supports critical loads.

How Do I Know If My Solar Battery Is Bad?

A bad solar battery won’t hold charge, won’t reach full charge, or trips protection under light load. Warning signs include fast self-discharge overnight, charge current tapering early, repeated BMS errors, or large voltage drop when a small, steady load is applied. Visible swelling, burning smell, or abnormal heat requires immediate shutdown.

Confirm with simple diagnostics before you replace parts. After a full charge and 2–3 hours rest, measure resting voltage and cell balance against spec, then run a controlled discharge (≈0.2C).
