Ford Targets Data Centers And The Grid With A New Battery Storage Business

Ford is repurposing EV battery capacity into grid-scale storage. The company says it will launch a new battery backup business aimed primarily at commercial grid customers, with data centers as a secondary focus. Shipments are planned to begin in 2027 at 20 GWh per year. Ford also states it plans to invest about $2 billion over the next two years and build LFP-based systems using U.S. facilities in Kentucky and Michigan.

What Did Ford Announce About Battery Storage Systems

Ford plans containerized systems built around LFP prismatic cells. In its official update, Ford describes producing LFP prismatic cells, BESS modules, and 20-foot DC container systems, including 5 MWh plus class products at its Kentucky site.

The Michigan plant remains scheduled for LFP production in 2026. Ford also notes the Michigan site will produce smaller amp-hour cells for residential energy storage solutions, alongside LFP cells intended for an upcoming midsize electric truck program.

Why LFP Battery Chemistry Keeps Winning In Stationary Storage

LFP is increasingly the default for grid-scale deployments. The IEA notes lithium iron phosphate remains the preferred choice for grid-scale storage based on cost and energy-density considerations, compared with other lithium-ion chemistries that often fit space-constrained uses.

Grid storage buyers prioritize predictable performance and safety. For battery backup and grid services, operators typically evaluate ramp rate, cycle profile, thermal management, and system-level protections rather than only cell-level energy density.

What This Means For Data Center And Utility Procurement Teams

Data centers and grid operators are buying infrastructure, not just batteries. Battery energy storage systems are used for multiple roles on power systems, and EIA notes utility-scale BESS often performs more than one function depending on market and grid needs.

More OEMs are targeting the same demand pocket. Ford’s move follows a broader trend where companies with high-volume battery manufacturing capabilities target stationary storage markets alongside established players already selling storage at scale.

MANLY Battery Products Relevant To LFP Battery Backup Projects

MANLY Battery supplies LiFePO4 and lithium-ion batteries for industrial programs. For integrators building battery backup systems around LFP battery platforms, MANLY’s portfolio spans 6V to 72V configurations with application experience in UPS, base-station support, and industrial energy storage, supported by internationally used compliance and transport standards such as UN38.3, IEC62133, UL, and CE. MANLY also specifies prismatic-cell LiFePO4 designs with a protection-focused BMS approach and offers a 10-year warranty structure for qualifying products.

Solar home storage battery replacement for enterprises

This product positioning aligns with the direction highlighted in Ford’s announcement: prismatic LFP-based, modular systems designed for commercial duty cycles, where buyers typically require traceable documentation, repeatable specifications, and system-level safety controls.
